Rare Antique Yao Minority Horsehair and Silk Embroidered Hat. Unique hat with a crown of interwoven white horsetail topped with a round silver piece with silk beaded tassels; main brow area of black satin is decorated with single-ply silk satin-stitch colorful embroidery of auspicious images including birds, butterflies and fish as well as a main composite image of flowers; silk embroidered designs are interspersed with tiny couched gold tread decorative additions; traditional Yao black and white porcelain beads decorate the brim; lining of natural cotton does show soiling from wear; hat ties together in the back woven cotton ties; early 20th century; from the Collection of Roger Hollander; circumference adjustable, minimum of 20.4”.
