Black Silk Qing Dynasty Tiger Hat with Embroidered Ear Flaps. An unusual tiger hat with ear flaps that can be worn down showing just black silk on the outside or worn up revealing butterflies embroidered with flowers symbolling joy, love, and fortune. On both cheeks are more extremely fine silk embroidering on gold foil of colorful birds and flowers. The back flap is a particularly fine example of intricately couched applique plants; the numerous woven brands throughout the hat are in good condition; The eyes are missing some lashes, the wang character on the forehead is partly missing, and the mouth is rough; the orange silk brocade lining does have staining and some wear on top; the official’s top knot is in tack as are the ears; all in all this is a special example of a Qing Dynasty tiger hat; late 19th c; Han Chinese; 20” circumference
