Han Chinese Child’s Summer Tiger Hat. Open topped black silk tiger hat with all of the traditional features including the Chinese character “wang” for “king” on the tiger’s forehead indicating that the tiger is the king of the animals. Sides of the tiger are decorated with fine silk embroidery of silver foiled paper; the dark apricot silk long back has striking floral designs created from tiny silk braids and silver foil wrapped threads; the blue silk lining is soiled with wear, but otherwise the hat is in reasonably good condition; c 1900; northern China; 19” circumference.
