#675 Bright Orange Silk Tiger Chinese Children’s Hat. A good example of the protective tiger hat given to young boys to protective them from evils spirits and to imbue them with the strength and courage of the tiger, who is known of the King of the Animals. On the tiger’s forehead is the Chinese character “wang” for “king”. Finely embroidered stripes are added to the orange silk body; On black silk base are gold foil appliqué with colorful silk embroidered butterflies representing happiness; very fine blue silk back wind flap has exquisite image of a dancing girl bordered with of couched wrapped gold thread designs of butterflies and other auspicious images;  Generally good condition with some missing teeth and wear on the green silk lining;  late 19th century to early 20th century; northern China; Han Chinese; 18” circumference
