Geyi Miao Festival JacketJM-12 Geyi
Taijiang County, SE Guizhou Province, China This is an exquisitely executed labor-intensive festival jacket created by Geyi People, who are considered a branch of the Miao people. The two distinguishing characteristics of their work are the folded silk embroidery and the "dazi" embroidery which is similar to french knotting. In "padded silk" or folded silk embroidery hundreds of small squares are folded into triangle shapes and built up to form intricate geometric patterns almost gem-like in quality. The hand embroidery work is attached to an eggplant colored commercial brocade satin cloth. The garment, made in the last quarter of the 20th century, is in perfect condition. It represents over three years of labor. $950
