Hani Traditional Embroidered Woman's Jacket

JM-12 Xiding

Xiding Village, Menghai, Xishuangbanna Prefecture, Yunnan Province, SW China

This classic Hani hand-woven cotton jacket with silk embroidery was collected in Xiding Town. The garment was made by Te Shong's grandmother about 60 years ago. The family village is Manzanzhon Zai which is about 10 km from the small mountain town of Xiding. These garments are rare as the Hani population is not great. The cotton is raised locally and hand spun and hand woven. The running stitch embroidery patterns have changed little over the decades with the back having seven register layers of embroidery in bluish shades typical prior to 1970. The colored pieced woven cotton strips of the sleeves are similar to the patterns on the leggings. These garments are still worn daily by some women in the more remote villages.
