Zhuang Baby Carrier from Yunnan Province, ChinaBCZ -1 Yunnan
Some of the finest fully intact baby carriers have been made by women of the Zhuang minority living in the Wenshan Zhuang-Miao Autonomous Prefecture of eastern Yunnan, especially in Qiubei County. This exquisite carrier has a base and long straps of handwoven indigo-dyed cotton. Both silk satin embroidery and couching is used to create the floral patterns intespersed with butterflies. The peony in the center represents love, affection, prosperity, and femininity. The geometric upper border of the carrier is folding cotton squares into 3-D triangles. There is a possibility that the carrier was made by the Miao living in neighboring areas with the Zhuang. In perfect condition with intact straps, the carrier dates from the mid- 20th century.
