Miao Baby Carrier

BCM -23 Red Miao

This finely crafted baby carrier from the 2nd half of the 20th century was made in Jianhe County by Miao woman referred to as Red Miao.They have been creating unusual whorl style applique designs for over a century. According to authors Yu-Chiao Liu Lan,Christi Lan Lin, and Brenda Lin in Bonding via Babycarriers the whorl patterns depict butterflies, insects, and ferns and create an over-all rhythmic pattern. The applique pieces are shining cloth coated with water buffalo leather gel and are heavily couched with silk. Some of the background pieces are of commercial cloth. In perfect condition.
