Miao Wax Resist Batik Baby Carrier

Wax Resist Batik is a highly developed skill in many areas of Guizhou Province with some of the most exquisite work coming from Zhijing and Dafang Counties in western Guizhou. This piece is the traditional style with two squares on top and one larger on the bottom of the cotton carrier. The batik pieces would have been added to a base foundation which often accounts for some tearing or wear where the piece was attached. After the wax resist is applied with a simple knife like tool, the piece is dyed in locally grown indigo. On this carrier some yellow silk embroidery has been added.
