Amazing artistry in this early to mid-20th century baby carrier cover which is typical of the work done by the Dong ethnic group living in Liping County of SE Guizhou Province and in the Fulu area of neighboring Guanxi Province. The satin stitch silk embroidery is so fine that it looks like weaving. Work is done on indigo-dyed cotton. The center area has a much beloved pinkish plant dye. The cover is attached to a baby carrier and flipped up to act as a sun shield for the child's head. There is some wear in two sections of the piece.
